Daily Scripture

Now therefore fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and in faithfulness. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

(Joshua 24: 14-15)    English Standard Version

Joshua had been there from the beginning. From the first days of the Exodus, through the conquest of the Promised Land, Joshua had walked with the people of Israel. Through his faith and obedience he had become the anointed successor to Moses.

Along with Caleb, Joshua had traveled to the Promised Land with ten other spies. These two had argued for obedience to God's promise, rather than giving into the fear of the other ten spies. As was the usual case, Israel was disobedience and continued their wanderings.

Now the Promised Land has been conquered, and divided amongst the tribes, clans and families of the people of Israel. Knowing the fickleness of their faith, Joshua charges the Jews to make a choice. Serve the Lord who has provided for you and fulfilled His promises, or return to idolatry and its consequences. His loyalty, though, will be to the God of the Exodus, whose loving-kindness never fails.
